The Current Forecast

Understanding Wind Forces

The unit “bft” indicates wind force on the Beaufort scale, which measures wind force from 0 to 12.

0 – Calm: Perfect weather for a sundowner or a swim in Lake Scharmützelsee.

1 – Light Air: We hoist the sails and make gentle progress. Fun for everyone on board.

2 – Light Breeze: Perfect for our sailing yacht. Under full mainsail and headsail, we glide gently through the water.

3 – Gentle Breeze: Now we are moving. The yacht heels slightly and we can clearly feel the wind.

4 – Moderate Breeze: A wonderful wind helps our yacht make good progress. On family sailing trips, we reduce the headsail slightly so everyone enjoys the experience.

5 – Fresh Breeze: A great wind for our boat. We reduce the headsail. Small waves form on Lake Scharmützelsee, making it feel almost like sailing on the Baltic.

6 – Strong Breeze: Now we are really moving. We reduce the headsail and do not fully unfurl the mainsail either. The yacht sails elegantly and powerfully across the lake.

7 – Near Gale: At this wind force, the headsail stays furled. We sail under the mainsail alone, which gives us good forward movement. The yacht’s keel helps keep the boat sailing safely on Lake Scharmützelsee.

8 – Gale: The headsail stays furled and we set only part of the mainsail. Waves develop on Lake Scharmützelsee and some spray comes onto the deck.

9 – Strong Gale: At this wind force, whether we depart depends entirely on the wind direction. If we do go out, it is only with an experienced crew.

10 – Storm: Now we had better stay in the harbour and secure everything carefully.

11 – Violent Storm: Wind this strong is rare on Lake Scharmützelsee. It is best to head to “SeeBadSaarow”, “Le Gateau Rose” or “Cafe Dorsch” for a hot chocolate and a view of the lake.

12 – Hurricane Force: In these winds, we lower our flag, check all mooring lines again and enjoy the day ashore.

What Happens If It Rains?

It is one of our most frequently asked questions: “What happens if it rains?”.

We understand. Everyone wants good weather for their sailing trip: sunshine, a pleasant breeze and comfortable temperatures.

First, let us answer the question: Do we still sail when it rains?
Yes, we still sail if it rains. We are only unable to depart in a storm or thunderstorm.

What do we do if it rains during the trip? Our sailing yacht has a spacious saloon where you can shelter from the rain at any time. The sprayhood also provides some protection in the cockpit.

The Right Clothing: You know the saying: “There is no bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” A sailing trip takes place outdoors in the fresh air, so an occasional shower is perfectly normal. Bring suitable clothing and you can have a great experience.

Storage for Clothing: There is plenty of room on board for extra waterproof clothing. Bring it along so you are prepared. If you do not need it, it will be out of the way.

Weather Forecast: Unfortunately, forecasts have been rather inaccurate recently. The weather is usually better than predicted. And even when rain is forecast, it does not necessarily mean it will rain all the time.

Cancel or Reschedule: If very bad weather is forecast, you can cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours before departure.

Our View: A sailing trip is an outdoor experience. Conditions that are less than perfect can be an opportunity for a wonderful experience in nature.
